Consumers can save money on their gas and electricity bills by simply using the internet, it has been claimed.

In comments which may encourage consumers to use comparison sites, the Daily Express suggested that the best energy deals are often found online.

The newspaper reported that while prices on standard plans have reduced by £54, or just four per cent this year, those who use the net to find their supplier have saved much more.

Online consumers have enjoyed reductions of 12 per cent, or £133, the newspaper claimed.

However, according to the Express, just 1.3 million households, or five per cent, are currently on an online energy plan, meaning many may be paying too much to their energy supplier.

Last week, the Citizens Advice Bureau claimed that customers may be able to save money on their electricity supply by switching provider.
