A new report has praised energy efficiency policies in the UK and the benefits they give to consumers.
The Energy Efficiency Commitment (EEC) was recognised not just for its efforts to cut climate change but also the economic benefits for customers.
Referencing the EEC the report, from WWF and E3G, states: "In Phase 1 around ten million households benefited from energy-saving measures under EEC, leading to substantial savings on energy bills."
Under the new rules, all large energy suppliers had to provide customers with help to reduce their energy consumption.
However the report also warned in the long term suppliers could "put the cost of these energy saving measures back onto the consumer". This makes it more important to find the most affordable supplier who offers the best service for your energy needs.
The report scored countries based on their green credentials, citing particularly effective examples on green scorecards.
Figures from the UK government suggest that by making homes more energy efficient people could save over £100 per year on their gas and electricity bills.
