Millions of people are missing out on saving money on their gas and electricity bills, according to the home heat helpline.

New research shows that 3.6 million people are not taking advantage of the help available to cut down their energy consumption. It found that families could save up to £250 a year on their gas and electricity bills by introducing simple energy-saving measures to their home.

Commenting on the report, Tony Herbert, from the Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB), said: "With the recession continuing and fuel prices remaining at historically high levels, it is essential that people who are struggling with fuel bills take advantage of the help that is available before the cold weather kicks in."

Last month the CAB also recommended shopping around for the best energy prices to help avoid fuel debt.

The home heat helpline is a not-for-profit service which offers advice to those who are struggling to pay their fuel bills. Figures from the UK government state that over four million people were living in fuel poverty in 2008. This is compared to 1.2 million in 2004.

Locations in the UK most likely to be missing out are Liverpool, Leicester, Blaenau Gwen, Merthyr Tydfil, Neath/Port Talbot and Torbay.
