One of the big six energy firms has announced that it will be putting an end to estimated gas and electricity bills.
Under the new system British Gas customers will be able to read their own meters and then send in the reading online or by text. This could potentially provide savings on gas and electricity bills.
Consumers will also be able to log in online and monitor their energy use over the long term to reduce the amount they consume.
The new offer will not be available on all British Gas tariffs so it is still worth shopping around and comparing energy prices to ensure you're getting the best deal.
Martyn Hocking, editor of Which? magazine, said: "[It is] a sad indictment of the energy industry that the prospect of accurate bills is being heralded as an innovation. Paying for what we've actually used is the least we should be able to expect from our energy suppliers".
The Energy Retail Association, a trade body for energy companies, announced recently that all its suppliers would be offering every household in the UK a Smart Meter to measure energy usage and potentially reduce bills.
