'More information needed about boiler scrappage scheme'

9 out 10 can save money!
Consumers need more information about energy-saving equipment to reduce gas and electricity bills, according to one industry body.
The Chartered Institute of Plumbing and Heating Engineering (CIPHE) has said that without the right information about more energy-efficient models, and how to maintain them, consumers will not benefit from replacing their old boiler.
It was commenting on proposals from the government in the pre budget report which announced up to 125,000 homes would take part in a boiler scrappage scheme to replace inefficient boilers with newer models.
Blane Judd, chief executive of CIPHE, said: "Whilst we welcome any incentive that encourages members of the public to make their home safer and more energy efficient and have fully supported the scrappage campaign, a cash-back allowance on its own is not enough."
He added that consumers would need advice on the "installation of proper controls and the importance of regular maintenance".
It is estimated by the government that households could save £200 a year by installing a more efficient boiler. Ofgem also states that people could save £100 a year on their gas and electricity bills by switching supplier.
