Switching energy supplier has been named as one of the top ten ways of saving money in 2010 by the consumer group Which?.

The group cited research which revealed households could have saved an average of £263 pounds per year on their gas and electricity bills by shopping around for the best deal and changing energy supplier. Which? estimates that by the end of the year consumers could save at least £1,000 by taking better care of their finances.

Martyn Hocking, the editor of Which?, said: "Check what you're paying for goods and services, and shop around for the best deals. Don't settle for mediocre service either - vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere if you're not happy."

Other advice included comparing prices for phone, TV and broadband and installing a water meter, which could lead to a significant reduction on bills.

A recent survey from the Confederation of British Industry revealed that businesses could also save money by switching energy supplier. It found that over one third of firms had changed their gas or electricity supplier in the past year.
