New rules have come into force to protect consumers from being duped by door-to-door energy salesman.
The regulations, which have been implemented by Ofgem, mean that salesman will have to provide a written quote before they get customers to switch their gas or electricity supplier.
Hannah Mummery, from Consumer Focus, welcomed the move stating that the process will now become more transparent.
She said: "New conditions should make doorstep selling more accountable and transparent which is a welcome step forward."
Regulations have also come into force which allow customers on pre payment meters to switch energy suppliers, even if they have a debt of up to £200 on their account. Previously the debt limit was £100.
In the past the government has been criticised for its energy programmes. National Energy Action (NEA) warned that the scheme to put Smart Meters in all UK house may not be of benefit to vulnerable groups.
Maria Wardrobe, director of communications at the NEA, said that "the advantages for fuel poor customers are less certain".
