Switching energy supplier is one way which households could reduce their gas and electricity bills, according to one expert.

In a guide advising households about how they can cut the amount of money spent on powering their home, Moneywise said that those who have not switched supplier in the past 12 months are "likely" to be able to save money by doing so.

The article explained that people should "dig out a recent bill and enter your postcode at one of the sites to compare deals across suppliers" as "opting for an online bill and paying by direct debit will secure the cheapest deals".

It added that before choosing a new gas or electricity supplier people should check the small print to make sure they're not incurring any hidden extra costs.

Other tips for reducing the amount of people's monthly energy bills included switching lights off when leaving the room, not putting appliances on standby and ensuring the house is properly insulated.

Smart meters, which provide real time information on household energy usage and how much it costs, were also suggested as a way to change people's attitude to gas and electricity consumption.
