Almost half of UK businesses are concerned about the rising cost of energy bills, according to the Carbon Trust.

A new survey of over 700 businesses by the body found that 49 per cent are worried about energy price hikes. This is compared to just 13 per cent who were concerned about the impact of new environmental legislation.

Businesses are now being urged to make energy saving measures, which could save firms that spend over £50,000 on gas and electricity bills a year 20 to 30 per cent, by taking part in the trust's Carbon Survey.

This is part of a drive to cut the cost of commercial energy usage by £3 billion every year.

Ian Cheshire, group chief executive of the Kingfisher, said: "It is simply good business sense to be smarter about the way we use energy. It cuts costs, makes us more efficient and improves our reputation with customers."

A report by the Confederation of British Industry released last year found that over one-third of businesses switched energy supplier in 2009 in a bid to reduce their gas and electricity bills.
