Consumers on a Staywarm gas and electricity plan have been advised to shop around and make sure the deal is right for them.

Anyone over the age of 60 who lives in a three bedroom house with less than four people can apply to join Staywarm, which fixes the price of bills for a year so customers are paying the same amount each month.

However, Fergus Muirhead from the BBC said that, while Staywarm offers advantages for some, it is not for everyone and people should check around to make sure they have the best deal.

"Because Staywarm doesn't suit everyone its prices don't appear on many comparison websites, but you can check them on ukpower.co.uk," he explained.

Mr Muirhead also said that those who are worried about paying their winter fuel bills should make sure that they are receiving all the benefits they are entitled to. The BBC recommends that everyone should take advice based on their own individual situation.

Earlier this month, Age Concern said that many older people would be worried about the size of this month's gas and electricity bill following the spell of bad weather.
