One of the UK's big six energy firms has announced substantial price cuts for customers.

British Gas said that it plans to reduce the cost of gas prices by an average of seven per cent. It is thought that this will save customers an average of £55 per year on their gas bills.

The company claims that a number of prices cuts over the past few months mean that dual fuel bills for their customers have been reduced by £187.

Commenting on the announcement, Phil Bentley, managing director of British Gas, said that the cut has come in time for customers to benefit on their winter fuel bills.

"As well as cutting prices three times in the past year, we have been helping our customers improve their energy efficiency and cut their energy use by seven per cent," he explained.

According to Moneywise, using a price comparison site to find a better deal and switch gas and electricity is one way to reduce energy bills.

This is said to be particularly true for those who have not switched in the past 12 months.
