The launch of the new Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) Energy Efficiency Scheme is "one of the most positive initiatives [that] the government has implemented" with regards to helping cut the UK's carbon output.

This is the view of a spokeswoman for the Renewable Energy Centre, who explained the move will encourage businesses to bring down their emissions as it offers financial benefits.

One way firms can save money on their energy costs is by carrying out an electricity price comparison and switching to a cheap electricity supplier.

The representative said the scheme will be used by larger businesses across the UK as a way to "show the public they are serious about climate change".

However, she warned some smaller enterprises may not be able to take full advantage at present, as many are still struggling with the effects of the recession and might not be able to afford the initial cost of making any changes to their buildings.
