Homeowners who have switched to a cheap electricity supplier may be tempted to use the money they have saved to explore some of the "hidden gems" on offer in the UK.

Chief executive of UKinbound Mary Rance said the country has a whole host of attractions on offer, which may tempt those who have opted to switch energy supplier and benefit from lower fuel prices.

"The UK is extremely affordable at the moment," she remarked, adding that the "iconic" attractions of London are popular during the spring, along with places like York, Bath, Stonehenge and Windsor.

Ms Rance noted the country "offers places of interest to young and old [alike]" and is also full of countryside attractions, such as walks in the Pennines, Peak District or south coast and the host of "unusual churches to explore".

British Gas customers may be among those who are set to save money in the future, as the firm recently announced the launch of a new scheme that will put two million smart meters in homes by 2012.
