Cheap electricity for poorer homeowners is the focus of the new energy act 2010, which has been created after the energy bill was given royal assent.
Mandatory social price support, meaning energy companies will have to give assistance to those currently struggling to pay their energy bills, is a key part of the new act, which was created on Friday (April 9th).
New powers have been formed to give households eligible for assistance with their gas and electricity costs greater guidance on the help they can get.
Those who are struggling to pay their bills but do not meet the criteria to receive assistance might want to consider carrying out an electricity price comparison to see if they can bring their costs down by switching to a cheap dual fuel supplier.
Also included in the act is a change that lets the government set the timeframe that energy companies must meet when telling customers gas and electricity tariffs are changing, which may give people more time to switch energy supplier if prices increase.
The bill is one of many passed on Friday, with others given approval including the digital economy bill and the crime and security bill.
