The Labour Party's 2010 manifesto has been praised by one body for a measure that could result in cheap electricity benefits for some homeowners.

According to the UK Green Building Council, the party's plans for a 'pay as you go' scheme to fund home energy efficiency improvements should be welcomed.

The initiative would see homeowners paying for alterations to their property that reduce the energy consumption of their home using the money they save on electricity bills.

And if households carry out an electricity price comparison and switch to a cheap electricity supplier, they could find they save even more on their energy outgoings.

"The government has led the way in making sure that British homes are greener homes through our world-leading commitment to all new homes being zero carbon by 2016," remarked Paul King, chief executive of the council, which was formed in 2007 and aims to help improve sustainability in the housing sector.
