"Unfair" National Grid prices to 'jeopardise' cheap energy supply

Businesses may find it more difficult to benefit from cheap electricity due to "unfair" transmission charges being levied on energy suppliers by the National Grid.
In a letter sent by electricity industry leaders to politicians that has been obtained by the Times, they argue the fees are holding back development of renewable electricity projects.
"The transmission charges are making our renewables strategy more expensive, as well as putting at risk the full development of a key natural resource," the letter, which has been signed by Nick Horler and Ian Marchant - the chief executives of Scottish Power and Scottish and Southern Energy - states.
Firms wanting to secure a supply of cheap electricity may want to carry out an electricity price comparison and consider moving to a provider that will offer a price guarantee in light of this development.
However, the National Grid argues the charges encourage suppliers to locate their power plants near population centres in order to cut transmission costs and offer cheap electricity to consumers.
