Homeowners hoping to take advantage of cheap gas and cheap electricity should be looking at improving the energy efficiency of their property.

This is according to director of the National Home Improvement Council Andrew Leech, who urged people to look at making their home more environmentally-friendly.

"That is the thing [that] in the future is going to [provide] the most advantage [in terms] of increased prices and value in a property," he explained.

It may also help homeowners benefit from cheap gas and electricity, especially if they switch energy supplier in order to take advantage of lower costs.

Recent research from Shelter and the Royal Institute of British Architects showed 12 per cent of homeowners who are looking to make improvements to their property would be doing so for energy efficiency reasons and Mr Leech said he is surprised the figure is so low.

"I am very surprised at that", he remarked, adding the number "ought to be 100 per cent".
