Cheap gas bills could allow Britons who have felt strapped for cash to book themselves a summer holiday in France.

A break in France may be made even more affordable by those who decide to travel to the country by train.

The Association of European Rail Agents (AERA) has said many Britons will choose the train over other transport, especially because of the convenience of travelling directly from one city to another.

Money saved from cheap gas bills and from booking train tickets in advance could be put towards meals out to try the French cuisine, as well as day trips to old churches and cathedrals.

Toni Rixson, chairperson of AERA, said when holidaymakers fly they have to travel to and from the airport, which can add a lot of time on to journeys.

Cash-conscious consumers could save even more money by not having to worry about luggage charges and high-fare taxi rides to their accommodation.

Eurostar recently revealed more than 84 per cent of Britons would probably or definitely choose high-speed rail over air when planning their next visit to the continent.
