DIY jobs need not cost the earth, it has been suggested, although switching to a cheap gas supplier could help homeowners raise that little bit of extra cash.

According to Duncan Hayes, editor at Build It Magazine, making over a property does not have to be an expensive task.

Indeed, he suggested a lick of paint as one way an affordable revamp can be carried out.

And by saving some extra money on cheap gas bills, many Brits may find they can afford to treat themselves to a few pots of paint.

"Decorating is a way to make your mark and improve your home at a very affordable cost, with very apparent results," Mr Hayes stated.

He added an improve-rather-than-move trend has been born out of the recession, where people would rather do up their current surroundings than fork out for a new home.

A recent poll by the Royal Institute of British Architects and Shelter found almost three-quarters of homeowners have a home improvement project that they want to see completed.
