Cheap electricity could prove to be one of the benefits of making sure a company's network infrastructure is as efficient as possible.
IT networks can be wasteful with electricity, potentially costing a business more in energy expenditure, it has been said.
Andrew Mulholland, marketing manager at D-Link Europe, revealed network switches often use 50 per cent more electricity than is actually needed.
By reducing energy consumption, firms will be able to enjoy cheap electricity bills, he suggested.
Newer and smarter IT equipment may be a short-term cost that reduces long-term energy expenditure.
Companies should look at "network infrastructure that has intelligence built into the product that saves power, not only because of the reduction to the electricity bill but also because there are ancillary benefits that come with it", Mr Mulholland explained, adding these included products not heating as much, extending their lifespan.
A recent survey by Morse found 72 per cent of UK firms believe greener IT is a top priority.
