Switching to a cheap electricity provider could give people a bit of extra cash to upgrade their mobile phone.

Upgrading to a new smartphone can prove pricey, especially if individuals decide to buy the handset outright, rather than get a contract deal.

This is because the upfront cost will be higher, although this is spread throughout the life of a contract if this option is taken.

But, according to Mobile Business, smartphones are set to replace other handsets, which may mean Britons will need to keep up.

"There is so much you can do on these phones - they are tiny computers - and everything you ever wanted to do and ever could do on computer is now on your phone," explained Heather Mclean, editor of the publication.

She referred to Apple's iPad as technology that has risen out of the trend for smartphones, which started with the iPhone and the BlackBerry.

During the first quarter of 2010, smartphone sales reached 54.3 million units, Gartner revealed.

This marks a 48.7 per cent rise from the same quarter in 2009.
