It is necessary to understand how much energy one uses in order to get cheap electricity.

This is the statement made by James Strawbridge, an eco campaigner and television presenter.

"Understanding how many units of electricity you use in your house is the best way to then reduce the amount you use," he said.

He suggested buying an inexpensive energy monitor and using it to gauge electricity consumption.

People could also work out which room uses the most energy and mark it as the first one to receive new windows or insulation.

Mr Strawbridge said that getting cheap electricity and saving money would be a strong motivator for people to reduce their power usage.

The British Fenestration Rating Council recently revealed that households are upping their energy bills by almost £500 annually because they do not have energy-efficient windows.

A third of people thought that houses lost most of their heat through the roof, but in fact more of it goes through windows.
