The UK faces a "challenging" period as it bids to become more sustainable, perhaps making the use of cheap business electricity and business gas particularly important.
Manchester City Council's executive member for the environment Nigel Murphy says action "must be taken" if the country is to go green.
While he admits some effective measures have already been put in place by the government, the task ahead "always requires us to consider challenges".
And with at least a decade until many organisations - including the city council - are due to operate from carbon-neutral buildings, the importance of getting the best deal on business electricity and gas may never have been greater.
"The start we have made … is going to have to move to a whole new scale," Mr Murphy states.
His comments follow the introduction of a new Energy Bill in last week's Queen's Speech that will see energy efficiency improved at UK firms.
