A switch of energy supplier is just one potential way to cut down the size of home power bills.

More tips have been offered by Gardneredge.com, which if followed could help people to save cash each month.

The first of these is to raise the thermostat during the summer months, as even a slight change can trigger savings of more than 20 per cent on cooling.

Secondly, insulation is of paramount importance - in particular, homes where one part feels warmer than another are likely to benefit from the introduction of new insulation materials.

Another piece of advice offered by the website is to close curtains and blinds during warm summer days in order to avoid rooms being needlessly heated.

And the kitchen can do its bit to provide a home with cheap gas and electricity bills, with one tip to use the microwave instead of a power-sapping oven.

The expert advice given on insulation mirrors that from E.ON last week, which suggested the technology typically pays for itself within a year.
