Cheap electricity bills are just one of the advantages seen by football club Manchester United since the introduction of its environmental programme Reds Go Green.
Energy-saving measures, including upgrading the stadium's heating and ventilation system, have led to large reductions in the amount spent on daily running costs, reports the Carbon Trust.
Reducing lighting in the north stand tunnel has brought cheaper electricity bills to the premiership league team, cutting back spending by £10,000 a year.
The club has made a commitment to reduce its carbon footprint by ten per cent.
Successful measures, including processing waste using energy-recovery techniques, mean the popular football squad has won the Carbon Trust Standard for managing and minimising its emissions.
In total, the new initiatives have reduced the amount of carbon dioxide produced by 1,200 tonnes, equivalent to a year's worth of carbon from 240 households.
Carbon Trust schemes aim to support the public and private sector to cut energy reliance and bring low-carbon technology into wider use.
