Cheap gas bills may be one of the many results businesses that follow Carbon Trust guidelines experience.

The organisation has published a new guide about carbon footprinting for businesses.

By understanding what emissions are caused by operations, the Carbon Trust hopes firms will then be able to reduce their footprint and become more environmentally friendly.

While a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions is one potential result of greener activities, so too could be cheap gas bills if energy is used more efficiently.

Carbon Footprinting: The next step to reducing your emissions, advises firms savings can be made by deploying a carbon management programme.

"Footprinting can also help businesses to improve processes, cut costs and meet reporting requirements for environmental legislation," noted director of solutions for the Carbon Trust Hugh Jones.

According to the organisation it has helped its customers save £1.4 billion in energy costs and 23 million tonnes of carbon.
