People will have to make important decisions about energy efficiency if they are to benefit from cheap gas and electricity bills as a result.
That is the joint view of the Energy Futures Lab (EFL) at Imperial College London and supplier EDF, which suggest each individual can do their bit to improve the credentials of an eco-friendly Britain.
"People's impact on the environment is captured in their choices about their consumption of energy in the home both for the provision of electricity and, very importantly, for the provision of heat," explains professor Nigel Brandon, director of the EFL.
Simple methods such as insulation and closing curtains could, over a period of time, have a great effect both on the environment and energy bills.
Recent research by Zero Carbon Britain 2030 concluded the UK has the potential to cut greenhouse gas emissions to zero within 20 years, triggering a range of green and economic benefits.
