The importance of switching energy supplier in order to enjoy the cheapest bills may have been highlighted in new research by Asda.
According to the supermarket firm, Britons are currently dealing with increasing budget concerns that have meant the typical family has £6 less per week to spend compared with a year ago.
The Asda Income Tracker also shows there has been a 2.6 per cent fall in the amount of disposable income available to typical UK households.
To compound the problem, the cost of essential items and services is continuing to soar, having risen by 5.1 per cent on prices from May 2009.
Andy Clarke, president and chief executive officer at Asda, says: "This month's Asda Income Tracker really shows how tough customers are finding it out there, even before the emergency Budget."
The Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College London, in conjunction with EDF Energy, this week urged people to take measures to improve energy efficiency - which could also result in smaller bills.
