Homeowners have been offered tips on how to enjoy cheap gas and electricity bills by a newspaper.

While switching energy supplier to a more cost-effective provider is one obvious solution to money worries when it comes to powering a home, there are other factors that can combine to have a significant effect.

The Kansas City Star tells the story of one US citizen, Jennifer Mays, who added insulation to her attic and sprayed foam in gaps between her home and its foundations.

Ms Mays is now saving a considerable amount of cash on her home energy bills as a result of the actions she took following an energy audit.

The newspaper adds further advice, such as using energy-efficient light bulbs and installing a programmable thermostat that can be changed at short notice.

Last week, the Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College London teamed up with EDF to urge people to use sustainable energy, which could also help to reduce bills.
