A council has taken action to evaluate whether homeowners in its region require new methods to save energy and enjoy cheaper gas and electricity bills.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council teamed up with the Energy Saving Trust to take thermal images of buildings and work out if they were leaking too much power, reports the Epsom Guardian.

If they are, homeowners will be notified and advised to take advantage of technology such as insulation.

While this will help to drive down power consumption and, as a result, gas and electricity bills, some people may find switching energy supplier is an even better way to cut costs.

Of the 4,590 properties captured by the heat-seeking cameras, more than 1,500 have been identified as having the potential to improve their energy efficiency, the newspaper explains.

The Kansas City Star this week advised people to invest in insulation if they hope to cut their home energy bills.
