Businesses and homeowners in Birmingham could soon enjoy cheap gas and electricity bills after a committee was set up with the intention of driving them down.

The Climate Change and Sustainability Cabinet Committee will work with the city council to improve the efficiency of the second-largest conurbation in the UK.

It will outline its plan and ultimate targets before undertaking a range of actions designed to reduce power consumption and do more for the environment.

Councillor Paul Tilsely says: "[The city is] now being recognised as a national and international leader on environmental issues - the committee will give us an even more co-ordinated, strategic and accountable focus to our activities in this field."

The council hopes to reduce carbon emissions by some 60 per cent by 2026, with a decrease in the current city-wide energy bill of £1.5 billion the main way to achieve this.

Birmingham is aiming to become the first fully sustainable city in Britain.
