Green-thinking homeowners across the world are waiting for companies to take a lead with their business energy.

That is the view of Tesco chief executive officer Terry Leahy and Paul Polman, chief executive officers at Unilever, who gave a speech on the topic of climate change this week.

Mr Leahy said consumers believe firms can take a lead by adopting measures that reduce the size of energy bills and trigger a move to greener power.

Should this occur, many individual customers may decide to switch energy suppliers to the most eco-friendly and join the green revolution.

"People are most concerned about their incomes and jobs. But even in the middle of the recession, research in the UK found almost half of consumers thought about the environmental impact of products," Mr Leahy explained.

Experts from B Birmingham this week said the Midlands city, which is aiming to become the first sustainable conurbation in the UK, could offer businesses a reduction in their energy bills should certain steps be taken.
