Supermarket chain Asda has shown how business energy can be cut and money saved by improving its efficiency in recent years.

Since 2007, the company states it has cut back to the tune of £35.7 million, while in 2009 it managed to save £11.2 million purely through a decrease in electricity consumption.

Its significant reduction in business energy bills may inspire other firms, who could use the surplus of cash in other areas.

As well as benefiting from its improved electricity usage, Asda has also enjoyed a financial saving of £3.4 million by encouraging customers to use fewer plastic bags at its checkouts.

One advantage of energy efficiency at Asda may be its increased competitiveness in the supermarket price war, with the company now able to offer consumers who find eight comparable products elsewhere at a cheaper price the difference in cash.

Businesses were last week urged to lead the move to widespread use of sustainable energy by Tesco chief executive officer Terry Leahy.
