An expert believes it is "really important" for the government to support businesses in their quest to enjoy cheaper gas and electricity as a result of improved energy efficiency.

Simon Bullock, economy campaigner at Friends of the Earth, says the coalition government needs to prove it is serious about a low-carbon environment.

One way to do this is to offer guidance and help to firms as they attempt to control their business energy output.

"It's really important that the government continues to support these industries, whether it's offshore renewables or energy efficiency or low carbon vehicles," Mr Bullock states.

He adds the green investment bank backed by chancellor George Osborne would be one effective way of improving the sustainability of power consumption in the UK.

Mr Osborne used last week's emergency Budget to detail his plans, saying the government would bring forward private investment in green technology and eco-friendly energy production.
