A switch of energy supplier may be one way to overcome the problem of overcharging, with UK families said to have paid an average of £74 more than they should have done for their power in 2008.
Claims Financial notes the country's energy sector took £1.6 billion more than it should have done from customers during the 12-month period.
One common cause of this is firms using guesswork and previous consumption rates to calculate new bills.
"[Firms] are under no legal obligation to read any customer's meter on a more regular basis than once every two years," the publication explains.
This means they can get away with estimating costs, meaning houses that have lowered their usage are left paying higher bills.
However, some Britons may wish to switch energy supplier, as this could result in a lower gas and electricity rate and go some way towards saving cash.
The Energy Futures Lab at Imperial College London recently urged people to convert to sustainable energy - which may also help to reduce monthly invoices.
