One reward that people who switch energy suppliers and save cash could treat themselves to is a trip to Poland.

Agnieszka Bigaj, marketing and tourist information executive at the Polish National Tourist Office, says visitors should go off the beaten track if they want to get an authentic feel of the country.

She recommends spots such as the Tatra mountains, where original wooden architecture can be enjoyed.

While Poland is excellent value for money and less expensive than many countries in Europe, Ms Bigaj adds further tips for those travelling on a budget.

"If you prefer to travel [cheaply], use hostels instead of hotels, public transport instead of rented cars, and dine at Milk Bars which offer tasty, traditional food," she advises.

With this in mind, it may not take too many months of saving on gas and electricity bills before such a trip is affordable.

Tesco Travel Money says Poland, along with Bulgaria and Hungary, offers the cheapest breaks this summer.
