While many people will consider a switch of energy supplier as one way to drive down the costs of their home power bills, there are other effective ways of doing so.

For example, adding insulation to a home is a quick and easy process that results in immediate savings, explains the San Francisco Chronicle.

Even those homeowners who have some insulation should remember every surface counts, so introducing it to garages, basements and attics is just as useful.

Other pieces of advice given by the publication include installing a thermostat, which should allow people to turn off gas and electricity when they are out or away from home for a period of time.

In addition to this, fixing leaks and cleaning windows are also recommended, while some people may wish to seal gaps that could let heat escape.

Reigate and Banstead Borough Council recently carried out a test on houses that identified where energy was leaking from each property.
