Firms may be able to lower their business energy bills by following some simple efficiency advice, one expert has argued.

Jim Haywood, environment director for Business in the Community, noted the average office wastes around £6,000 annually by leaving computers and other equipment running when it is not in use at weekends or on bank holidays.

And he urged firms to take cutting their carbon output "seriously", adding that a 20 per cent reduction in consumption can give a similar boost to profits as a sales increase of around five per cent.

Mr Haywood also warned over the importance to comply with new legislation relating to green issues, such as the Carbon Reduction Commitment Energy Efficiency Scheme.

His comments come after the release of a new report from the Committee on Climate Change, which revealed the pace of emissions cuts needs to be increased if the UK is to meet its reduction targets.
