The importance of securing a cheap gas and electricity tariff may be more important than ever before, after new statistics highlighted the current high rate of energy consumption.

Figures announced today (July 2nd) as part of Social Trends 40 by the Office of National Statistics show the UK was using the equivalent of 2.7 million tonnes of fuel in 1970, but this increased to 6.8 million tonnes by 2007.

It also illustrates a rise in domestic energy consumption of 24 per cent between 1970 and 2008, with 68 per cent of the latter figure being made up of gas.

The UK performed poorly in a league table of European countries in terms of producing its own energy from renewable sources, coming 18th out of 27, the organisation reveals.

One way to offset the surge in gas usage may be to find a provider of cheap gas.

As well as securing cheap rates, another way to pay less for gas is to improve the efficiency of a home, with the San Francisco Chronicle this week stating adding insulation to walls is a good way of doing this.
