Many homeowners will be in a position to switch energy supplier once changes to the bills they receive kick in.
Consumer Focus believes the plan to provide annual statements with in-depth analysis of consumption will give people more information about what they are using and paying.
This will put a significant number of individuals in a more informed state when it comes to making a decision over whether to switch energy supplier in order to take advantage of cheaper rates elsewhere.
"It will give consumers the tools to make more positive switches. I think there has been a lack of transparency previously where people were often unaware they can get cheaper deals out there," explains Hannah Mummery, senior policy advocate for energy at the organisation.
A switch of energy suppliers may help households save a large sum of cash each month, which could be put to better use.
Ofgem said this week that, as part of the project, homeowners will also receive an improved bill each month from July.
