British homeowners hoping to enjoy cheap gas and electricity'>cheap electricity bills in the future could follow the lead of an American organisation.

The Local Energy Alliance Program is running the Home Energy Makeover Contest, which is designed to cut costs for residents, reports Charlottesville Tomorrow.

As well as making life more affordable for scores of people, the project will create green energy jobs and stimulate the economy, Charlottesville mayor Dave Norris told the publication.

Cynthia Adams, executive director at LEAP, noted the scheme will help two households with cash and another eight with expert advice.

The methods the recipients use to lower their consumption of gas and electricity could be followed by people around the world.

Indeed, Brits looking to reduce their energy bills may wish to track the results to ascertain whether they would be good investments for them.

People have already been given a tip on how to use less fuel this week by the Sydney Morning Herald, which said reducing the amount of lighting in a property will help.
