Some UK pensioners are set to benefit from electricity'>cheap electricity, but could still wish to switch energy supplier in order to maximise the benefits.

The Department for Work and Pensions has announced it will offer rebates worth a total of up to £20 million to those who need them most.

These could be worth as much as £80 a month to some 250,000 older people in the country and will be deducted from electricity bills.

Steve Webb, minister of state for pensions, says: "This cash will help thousands of pensioners get help with their fuel bills who might otherwise be struggling to make ends meet."

The department hopes as many of the rebates can be handed out automatically, while some people will be contacted with a suggestion they call a helpline to see if they are eligible.

Scottish Widows' UK Pensions Report in 2008 suggested 55 per cent of men and 46 per cent of women are saving adequately for life after work.
