Some 1.4 million Brits could benefit from a change of energy supplier, if new figures are to be believed.

Consumer Focus believes these people are currently residing in properties powered by firms who will cut off the energy supply.

The organisation also reveals half of the 8.8 million citizens who rely on pre-pay meters who disconnect have somebody in their home with an illness or disability, while two in five are home to under-16s.

Some people may wish to resolve the problem by using UK Power to switch energy supplier and take advantage of affordable, cheap gas and electricity rates with another company.

"We must be concerned that hundreds of thousands of vulnerable consumers are walking a tightrope between topping up their energy to stay warm or buying a decent meal," says Mike O'Connor, chief executive at Consumer Focus.

The Department for Work and Pensions last week announced a scheme designed to help the elderly by offering rebates on electricity bills.
