The UK's struggle to hit renewable power targets could be hurting business energy customers hoping to enjoy cheap gas and electricity bills.

According to a spokeswoman from TheRenewableEnergyCentre.co.uk, the country's record is "embarrassing".

Recent figures from Eurostat showed it to be one of Europe's worst performing nations in terms of the share of energy that is from sustainable sources.

The expert notes: "The UK has fallen far behind Europe and countries such as Germany in the race to embrace renewable energy and sustainable ways of living."

One benefit of improved sustainability and efficiency could be a lowering of energy consumption, which can result in cheap gas and electricity bills.

The spokeswoman adds the UK is only now "getting to grips" with green demands made by the European Union.

Eurostat's results did shown a continent-wide improvement in the amount of renewable energy being used, up to 10.3 per cent from 9.7 per cent of the total.
