Firms hoping to reduce their business energy bills may be wise to follow the lead of Cambridge City Council.

The authoritative organisation has cut the annual cost of fuelling its buildings by £233,000 since 2005 after managing to cut its consumption of gas and electricity , a new report commissioned by the body finds.

One way other businesses could achieve a similar scenario is by securing a switch of energy supplier , which may allow firms to enjoy cheaper power rates.

The council says its cutbacks are equivalent to taking more than 200 cars off the road or making 125 homes entirely carbon efficient.

"Reducing the council's carbon footprint goes hand-in-hand with prudent use of our financial resources," explains Clare Blair, executive councillor of climate change and growth.

Insulation is something many firms planning to enjoy cheap business energy bills may wish to consider, with the Daily Telegraph recently suggesting those who do not insulate effectively may be hit financially under a new climate change bill.
