Saving energy has been highlighted as the principal way to enjoy cheap gas and electricity bills over the coming years.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change, releasing its first Annual Energy Statement since the formation of the coalition government, has targeted improved efficiency in homes and businesses.

"Reducing the amount of energy we use reduces energy bills and provides investment, which supports the development of the low carbon economy and green jobs," explains the report.

When teamed with a switch of energy supplier, the results could be even more significant.

The department goes on to note the importance of the Green Deal, which it hopes will see buildings across the UK benefit from improved insulation in the future.

A recent Daily Telegraph report suggested people who do not invest in adequate insulation for their home may find it hard to sell should they wish to move, as a new government bill may introduce a tax on people who buy inefficient properties.
