People who compare gas prices for a more energy-efficient home could also take a number of other steps to reach their green targets, it has been suggested.

According to AZDailySun.com, making a property environmentally-friendly does not mean modern conveniences need to be sacrificed.

Rather, individuals should take heed of a few tips, such as getting a home energy audit - which can pinpoint which areas of a house use the most energy.

The source advised: "One of the quickest ways to reduce your global warming impact is to unplug the extra refrigerator or freezer you rarely use."

It added considering different options to driving - such as cycling and walking - could also help, as well as spreading the word on climate change by making local elected officials aware of concerns on the matter.

The Department of Energy and Climate Change recently released its first Annual Energy Statement since the formation of the coalition government and it aims to reduce energy consumption and develop green job opportunities.
