People in the north-east of England may soon find they receive cheap electricity bills thanks to a scheme taking place in the area.

EDF Energy and Gentoo have joined forces to boost the green credentials of homes in the region, Energy Efficiency News reports.

The scheme - carried out as part of the energy provider's Community Energy Saving Programme (CESP) - aims to make 781 properties more environmentally-friendly.

Targets for the CESP commitment include a carbon emissions reduction obligation and a carbon score given for measures taken to ensure energy-efficiency.

Ian Porter, managing director of Gentoo Sunderland, explained: "This is one of the first examples of CESP being put into practice across the whole of the UK."

The campaign, which began in September 2009 and runs until December 2012, will target around 90,000 homes in total.

AZDailySun.com recently advised households to obtain a home energy audit and unplug unused appliances to help reduce their carbon footprint.
