Cheap business gas bills could be one of the benefits for a company that attempts to reduce its carbon footprint.

But new research has suggested more needs to be done by enterprises in the UK to prepare for climate change.

Carried out for the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs by Ipsos MORI, the survey showed many firms are not ready to tackle the problem.

Less than a quarter (23 per cent) of the organisations questioned revealed they had started taking action in regards to the risks and opportunities related to climate change.

However, three-quarters said they were concerned about the subject and 31 per cent had already been affected by it.

Environment secretary Caroline Spelman commented: "By planning for the adaption we need now, we can ensure that the UK is best placed to meet the challenges of climate change."

Properties in the north-east of England may soon receive cheap gas bills as a scheme set up by EDF Energy and Gentoo is aiming to boost the green credentials of 781 sites in the region.
