Companies relying on business electricity tariffs have just 50 days left to register for the mandatory CRC (carbon reduction commitment) Energy Efficiency Scheme, the Environment Agency has warned.

According to figures published by the body today (August 11th), over 1,200 organisations have signed up so far, with the combined electricity usage by the firms sufficient to power a third of all homes in the UK.

The deadline for submitting details is September 30th and the Environment Agency is anticipating an influx in applications from enterprises as the date gets closer.

"We would urge the remaining businesses to sign up now and not leave registration to the last minute," remarked head of climate change and sustainable development Tony Grayling.

A revised estimate shows up to 4,000 businesses are obligated to register, lower than the initial estimate of 5,000.

Applications for the scheme, which aims to help large public and private sector firms save costs by cutting their energy bills, opened on April 1st.
